Gugu Masondo
Founding President
Gugu Masondo is a mental health advocate, entrepreneur, and advertising leader, whose personal journey fuels her mission to serve others. A graduate of the University of Pretoria with a BCom in Marketing Communications, she combines strategic insight with creativity to make a meaningful impact.
In 2018, following her second psychiatric facility visit, Gugu founded Mental Matters SA, inspired by the lack of accessible mental health information in the Black South African community. Her organisation provides trusted resources, guidance, and community stories, helping people navigate life with knowledge, compassion, and self-awareness.
Professionally, having over 10 years’ experience, she is a senior account director in client services, partnering with major brands and delivering award-winning campaigns, including a Bronze Loerie Award in 2022 for Sol beer SA.
At the heart of Gugu’s work is service, empathy, and humanity. She leads with authenticity, walking alongside those she serves, and exemplifying the power of using one’s skills and experience to uplift communities.

Dr Khanyile-Lenake
Vice-President
After qualifying as a medical doctor in 2015, Nokukhanya has since gone on to qualify as a specialist paediatrician in 2024. Her passion for community health led her to understand the ways that she can educate the communities she serves with important information that is also easy to understand and explain to others. She believes the work she does with Mental Matters SA is a way for her to bridge the gap between healthcare providers as well as those living with mental health challenges
A graduate from the University of the Witwatersrand, she is a firm believer in approaching mental health holistically and partners with various specialists in several fields including financial, fitness and image consulting to share how to achieve a biopsychosocial approach to health. She aims to empower individuals to improve help-seeking behaviour as she understands the financial and social implications of untreated mental health issues.
Dr Khanyile-Lenake is a familiar face and voice in the media and at events, promoting healthy living amongst South Africans as a host, speaker and author.
